Dharbers_Klinefelter_Syndrome

Daniel Harbers

Extra X sex chromosome
Found within the Los Angeles Times it is written of the fourteen year old son of Jan Fuller and his every day struggle through his life. The unknown reason for her son's behavior truly baffled her. He was not able to properly socialize with peers often committing strange acts which could not be traced back to any logical purpose. Act's like threatening to throw computers or forcing himself into the bathroom of the opposite sex. With no explanation of why her son acted the way he did Jan came to the personal conclusion that it must have been autistic. The child was kicked out of one public school after another as his condition brought a large barricade between himself and what he could accomplish. The boy crawled through his life feeling left out, he was told that he was in fact different and was therefor worse. His speech dilemma again managed to make him even more left out than he already was. It was not until he was brought from on psychologist to another that it turned out that he was a child with Klinefelter Syndrome.
Physical Characteristics of a man with Klinefelter Syndrome

Well what exactly is Klinefelter Syndrome? Well Klinefelter syndrome plagues both male and female while can hinder ones mental mind it does however as well effect their physical body. The dysfunction is caused by an extra X chromosome within  a child as can be seen in the Image above. It can occur when the chromosomes within the egg cell or sperm cell split unevenly. If any of the cells end up entering the state of fertilization the child will be born with a Syndrome like Klinefelter or many more, This uneven split is a genetic malfunction but can happen to anyone at any random moment and even if it takes part in a genetic nature it is passed down from parent to child.

Luckily for the young boy he has found relief in The Speech and Language Development Center which had already improved the lives of many like him for around half a century before the encounter. Now with the extra help and support he has gathered from the institution he now understand's his situation, accepted it and learned from his disability."It has been a haven for us," exclaimed Jan Fuller referring to The Speech and Language Development Center.

  1. I liked the way you wrote from the point of view of an individual suffering from this syndrome and not being able to understand what is wrong with him.
I also liked the ending- that everything turned out well.
