Trisomy 21

Down syndrome
The Brighter side of Down Syndrome of San Joaquin County held its 9th annual Buddy walk on October 4th 2014.  Approximately 1000 people took part in it this year. The buddy walk consists of a one mile walk which then will be followed by a lunch, dance competition and other fun activates all the people that attend will receive a free t –shirts and the ones with down syndrome who complete the one mile walk will also receive a medal. The idea behind this is not only to fundraise for the Down syndrome community but to also raise awareness what it is and that people who have it are not that much different from the rest. The brighter side of Down syndrome organization also known as TBODS which is organizing this event also works on helping out families with Down syndrome and organize play dates for kids. So you might be asking yourself well what Down syndrome is. Well Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused from a chromosome defect. While a normal human has 23 pair of chromosomes (see fig1) a person with Down syndrome has 22 pairs because pair 21 has three chromosomes, this is why it gets the name Trisomy 21, as trisomy means that the cells has an extra chromosome, so a person with Down syndrome has 47 chromosomes (see fig 2) instead of 46 and therefore has some problems. Luckily this is does not occur too often in fact only one in 700 babies only suffers from Down syndrome, there is no way of preventing it as it is not passed down genetically it is normally an abnormality in the egg cell that causes the problems but the abnormality can sometime be found in the sperm cell. All Down syndrome patients have the following physical characteristics in common, they have low muscle tone, flat facial features, with small noses and ears, their small skin folds on the corner of the eyes, they also have a deep crease across the palm, enlarged tongue that normally sticks out, but one of the pluses is that they are hyper flexible. Unfortunately it isn't just their appearance but also they normally have problems communicating as they speak slower and can have problems learning and because of that they can be discriminated and made fun of throughout their life. This is one thing that TBODS is trying to prevent by trying to educated the public about the down syndrome and that these people are also normal human beings and should be respected and not being made fun of just because they are different and act differently.

(Fig2: As you can see here there are 3 chromosomes on the 21, this is called a trisomy)

  2. Well done. I think you should have concentrated more on the story and just give us the most important facts about down syndrome. It was very well written and now I know a lot more about down syndrome.

  3. Nice story. Maybe you could have added a bit more information from the story and less detail about the disorder. I liked how you first introduced the story, then the facts to make it more interesting. Good job :)

  4. I like how you added a pictures that describe the normal and the disorder in the chromosomes, but you squished the text together and that is not so appealing. But you did talk about the news story and explain what the disorder is in such a fashion that i can understand very clearly, so i like that very much. You have shown that you can explain what the disorder is in your own words and you deserve a round of applause for that! Clap-clap-clap-clap-clap

  5. Well done. Your explanation of the disorder is very good. Next time try and organize your blog a little better, into like 2 or 3 paragraphs. Also try and add a little more information about the story. Good job overall!

  7. I like that you have hyperlinks. I think it is a great story because it motivates people with down syndrome. It shows that they are unique and special and that they need special care. After the story you nicely explained what the disorder is. Maybe you could have referred the pictures in the text, and maybe you could have your opinion and ow it relates to the society

  8. You have many hyperlinks which are really helpful. You have a really good description of the story, with many details. You also have a very good description of the disorder. Maybe try to show the wider implications next time, to relate it to the world. Good job overall.
